The Pensive Quill - Breakout

The Pensive Quill
Anthony McIntyre
Breakout
The documentary Breakout detailing the September 1983 escape from the H Blocks was broadcast earlier in the week. I found it compulsive viewing. The escape took place against a background of the IRA being harried by supergrasses which the organisation and its allies preferred to describe as paid perjurers. That an operation involving so many people both inside and outside the prison was not compromised in that grass-induced precarious security environment is testimony to the ability of the people involved in managing it, particularly in the prison where keeping secrets was not a finely honed skill. Many worked the graveyard shift to pull this one off.

On the US - Irish Work Visa Deal
I guess the Celtic Tiger is dying. Now all those liberal, U.S. hating Irish will be complaining about Bush etc. on our soil. Getting tired of this dance! Let's bring people here who LOVE America, not those who are just looking to use this country for a paycheck.
Irish American GOP Leader, Westchester County, N.Y

First, why should Cowen defend 50,000 Irish who want to be Americans and just use the Irish Government to forward this end, and why is America always the fallback to a bad irish economy? We have our own employment issues here. I feel the US is constantly used by countries like Ireland (and many others) as a magic elixer. As soon as the Irish economy heated up in the mid 1990's, the Irish bedouins returned. Now they want to came back to the US because the Tiger is cooling, and we allow it. As if we don't have enough problems with 12 million illegals fighting for jobs in a crashed economy here. Now we are agreeing to hundreds of thousands more, collectively? As with federal spending, sometimes you just have to have a freeze. I would extend this strategy to visas for all countries, during these disasterous financial times in our country. Am I wrong? I know that this would not be popular with the Irish, but I am an American first, and although I am proud of my ancestry, I must defend the interests of my country first and foremost.
Irish American GOP Leader, The Bronx, N.Y.
Both my grandparents were Irish and I have travelled to Ireland many times, both on business and leisure over the last 20 years. Much has changed in that time period. The Irish today are so unlike their forebears. Anti Americanism is widespread. Hurley, I know that you will argue that the sentiment is confined to the elite media and the establishment but that has not been my experience. From Malin Head to Mizen Head I have experienced arrogance, contempt and disdain for all things American. As they sit arrogantly and smugly underneath the U.S. security umbrella, it seems that all Irish are expert critics on American security and foreign policy. While their own country sits by under the guise of "neutrality" and does absolutley nothing in the War on Terrorism they have the gall to condemn our every move. Their cherished "neutrality" of course is a luxury which they are allowed to enjoy because American fighting men, including their Irish American cousins, are prepared to go to war to defend Western freedoms and democracy.
As for our Irish "American" media, it is so blantantly anti American that the few times I now pick up the Irish Voice and the Irish Echo, I feel less and less Irish every time. I have no sympathy for the illegal Irish. All they want to do is take, take, take. When was the last time you heard an Irish politician coming over here asking what Ireland could do for America. As for as I am concerned, the Irish are a nation of ingrates and I know my grandparents are turning in their graves. The US should make it clear to the Irish that the free ride is over.

Thanks Pat . . . but I am more worried that Boyle/McGinley/Roche will tag along again with the IAUC and other left wing, Demo groups who sit at the feet of Prof. Frank Boyle of the University of Illinois. Prof Boyle is a bad guy who has them all impressed with his so-called brilliance in foreign affairs. He convinced them that the Extradition Treaty, which we needed to capture some bad guys, was directed at the IRA and needed to be opposed. It had nothing to do with the IRA (even Joe Biden told them that) but the AOH joined the chorus. Keep up the good work.

Islam - A Religion of Peace?

Allah or the Lord Jesus Christ? ...A Bit Scary
This is interesting and just a bit scary ....The Muslim religion is the fastest growing religion per capita in the United States. Especially among minorities!!!

Allah or The Lord Jesus Christ?
By Rick Mathes
Last month, I attended my annual training session that's required for Maintaining my state prison security clearance. During the session there was a presentation by three speakers representing the Roman Catholic, Protestant and Muslim faiths, who explained each of their beliefs. I was particularly interested in what the Islamic Imam had to say. The Imam gave a great presentation of the basics of Islam, complete with a video.
After the presentations, time was provided for questions and answers. When it was my turn, I directed my question to the Imam and asked: "Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that most Imams and Clerics of Islam have declared a holy jihad [holy war] against the infidels of the world and, that by killing an infidel, (which is a command to all Muslims) they are assured of a place in heaven. If that's the case, can you give me the definition of an infidel?" There was no disagreement with my statements and, without hesitation, he replied, "non-believers! "
I responded, "So, let me make sure I have this straight. All followers of Allah have been commanded to kill everyone who is not of your faith so they can have a place in heaven. Is that correct?" The expression on his face changed from one of authority and command to that of a little boy who had just been caught with his hand in the Cookie jar. He sheepishly replied, "Yes."
I then stated, "Well, sir, I have a real problem trying to imagine Pope Benedict commanding all Catholics to kill those of your faith or Dr. Stanley ordering all Protestants to do the same in order to guarantee them a place in heaven!" The Imam was speechless! I continued, "I also have a problem with being your "friend" when you and your brother clerics are telling your followers to kill me! Let me Ask You a question. Would you rather have your Allah, who tells you to kill me in order for you to go to heaven, or my Jesus who tells me to love you because I am going to heaven and He wants you to be there with me?" You could have heard a pin drop as the Imam hung his head in shame.
The author, Rick Mathes, is a well-known leader in prison ministry.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Micheál Martin Announces New Visa Deal with US Government

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Micheál Martin, T.D., has announced a major new agreement with the US Government that will enable Irish citizens to work and travel in the US for up to 12 months. Speaking following a signing ceremony in Washington with the US Deputy Secretary of State, Ambassador Negroponte, the Minister said:

"I am delighted that following months of negotiations, we have reached an agreement on a new Working Holiday Agreement that will enable a minimum of 20,000 Irish citizens who are in, or have recently completed, post secondary education to work and travel in the US for up to 12 months. This represents one of the most significant developments in our visa arrangements with the US in almost two decades".

Under the terms of the deal, up to 5,000 US citizens will also be able to work and travel in Ireland on the same basis. In addition to our new arrangements, the existing summer J1 programme will continue to exist as a separate programme. The Minister said that the agreement represented a vital investment in the long term health of our relationship with the US. He pointed out "by working and travelling for a relatively lengthy period in each others’ countries, our young people will build important connections which will help maintain our very close ties to the US- it is in a very real way a major investment in the health and strength of this vital relationship".

He highlighted the success of our similar arrangement with Australia- in which over 13,000 Irish people participated last year- and expressed the hope that the US programme would be equally successful.

Minister Martin emphasised that this initiative is separate to the Government’s ongoing campaign to find a solution to our undocumented. He said "today’s announcement is just one element in our three pronged approach involving a solution for our undocumented; new bilateral arrangements to provide reciprocal long term working visas (known as E3s) and the Working Holiday Agreement. Finding a solution for our undocumented remains a key priority for this Government".

The Minister highlighted the inter-Departmental nature of negotiations led by his Department and expressed appreciation to the Taoiseach, the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise Trade and Employment, the Minister for Education and Science and the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform for their Departments’ assistance.

The Minister encouraged all those interested in the new arrangements to logon to the Department’s website- www.dfa.ie for full details.

If At First You Don't Succeed . . .

In truth, the treaty is so gargantuan and garbled that no sane person would undertake to read it, never mind understand it. Its size and lack of plain English is a fundamental flaw that cannot be overcome unless it is changedMatt Cooper
It hasn’t gone away, you know. The Lisbon Treaty, just like a bad smell, continues to linger in public discourse prompted by ministerial comment and government sponsored surveys. Earth shattering news it most definitely is not to learn from the media that the EU is expecting the Irish government to buckle and hold another referendum in 2009.
In Gramscian terms it looks like the Dublin political class is reconnoitring the commanding heights in a war of position before manoeuvring to shaft the electorate and give the middle finger to democratic sentiment. Matt Cooper in the latest issue of the Sunday Times alerts his readers to a government belief that in order to reverse the defeat it suffered in the referendum, it need only win over one quarter of those who voted ‘no’ on the basis that they did not understand the treaty last time around.
True the government is Tower of Babel-like in its reconstruction of a shattered European strategy, evidenced from the public variance between the positions of Taoiseach Cowen and Foreign Affairs Minister Martin. But there is a sneaking suspicion that the real intent is to be found in the position of European Affairs Minister Dick Roche when three weeks ago he informed the public of his private view that another referendum is the way to go in tackling the thorny issue of the rejected Lisbon Treaty.

No Respect for 'NO' Vote

A plan to circumvent the Irish "no" vote begins to emerge
The main pro-Lisbon opposition parties in Ireland have also reacted angrily to suggestions of a second referendum. A spokeswoman for Fine Gael said that talk of a second referendum only served to highlight the "arrogance and lack of respect" the government has for voters. A spokesman for the Labour Party said comments about a second referendum were "not helpful" and that there can be no question of simply putting the same proposition to the people again. Continue

Biden - Buyers' Remorse

This is a rumor supposedly from an excellent source within the DNC:
On, or about, October 5th, Biden will excuse himself from the ticket, citing health problems, and he will be replaced by Hillary. This is timed to occur after the VP debate on 10/2.
There have been talks all weekend about how to proceed with this info. Generally, the feeling is that we should all go ahead and get it out there to as many blog sites and personal email lists as is possible. I have already seen a few short blurbs about this - the "health problem" cited in those articles was aneurysm.
Probably many of you have heard the same rumblings. However, at this point, with this inside info from the DNC, it looks like this Obama strategy will be a go. Therefore, it seems that the best strategy is to get out in front of this Obama maneuver, spell it out in detail, and thereby expose it for the grand manipulation that it is. So, let's start mixing this one up and cut the Obamites off at the pass.
Send this info out to as many people as you can - post it on websites and blogs - etc.

The case for John McCain
Last week, we made the case for Barack Obama. This week, we’ll make the case for John McCain.

But before we do that, let’s put things in perspective. The first and most important job of the chief executive is to defend the nation and make it safer. The second most important job is to ensure a strong economy, in part because without a strong economy the nation is weaker.

Moreover, in evaluating a presidential candidate, philosophy is more important than specific plans. Specific plans are seldom enacted. Here are a few of the stumbling blocks a new president may face.

Once taking office, he may find that the situation he has inherited requires him to react differently from the plans he has promised. In 1992, Bill Clinton campaigned on a plan to cut taxes for the middle class. When Clinton took office, he judged the financial situation of the country was such that it could not afford the tax cut or, for that matter, many of the spending programs he had promised. Did he lie during the campaign? Not at all: his philosophy was to expand the graduated tax rate such that the middle class accrued greater benefits than the wealthy did but, once he took office, he thought that it would b e fiscally irresponsible to do so.

Once a president takes office, not only does he have to deal with an inherited situation but he must deal with 535 members of Congress. Members of Congress have their own egos, politics, aspirations and opinions on what is best for the country. When John F. Kennedy, in September 1960, urged that a civil rights bill be enacted and passed in the next (his) administration, he had every intention of doing all he could to get a bill passed. It didn’t happen because he couldn’t convince Congress that it was in their and the country’s interest to pass a civil rights bill.

When a president takes office, unanticipated events may take priority and his specific plans promised during the campaign may take a lower priority. When George W. Bush campaigned in 2000 he promised a comprehensive immigration plan including guest workers as one of his high priorities. Then came September 11, 2001, and immigration was swept off the legislative agenda for his first term.

Back to Senator McCain and why his candidacy for president should be supported. We should support him not because he has the best specific plans but because his philosophy is best suited for a strong country and an economically sound country. Here are his major strengths.
Making the country stronger and safer. Whether or not you supported our invasion of Iraq in 2003, there is no doubt that our withdrawal would have been seen as a defeat for us and a victory for al Qaeda. John McCain has steadfastly supported victory in Iraq.

National Intelligence Estimate, January 2007: "If such a rapid withdrawal [e.g., over 12-18 months] were to take place … [Al Qaeda in Iraq] would attempt to use parts of the country – particularly al-Anbar province – to plan increased attacks in and outside of Iraq ..."

CIA Director Gen. Michael Hayden, testifying before the House of Representatives, January 2007: "… I strongly believe [U.S. failure in Iraq] would lead to al Qaeda with what it is they said is their goal there, which is the foundations of the caliphate, and in operational terms for us, a safe haven from which then to plan and conduct attacks against the West."

General David Petraeus, press briefing, April 2007: "Iraq is, in fact, the central front of al Qaeda's global campaign."

Osama Bin Laden, posted on Jihadist websites, December, 2004: “Baghdad [is] the capital of the caliphate."

John McCain, New Hampshire, November 2007: “I would rather lose an election than lose a war.”

John McCain, to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, July 2008: “Though victory in Iraq is finally in sight, a great deal still depends on the decisions and good judgment of the next president.”

Making a stronger economy. Sustainable economic growth is better served by independent markets and those markets are more likely to thrive in an environment where they have greater capital resources – i.e., greater capitalization is possible with lower taxes.

The Economist, April 2008: “Mr. McCain's approach to economics is moralistic. He thinks it wrong for Congress to waste other people's money, and wrong for chief executives to trouser huge pay packets when they mismanage.”

John McCain, at Carnegie Mellon University, April 2008: “In our free society, it is left to each one of us to make our own way in the world -- and our jobs, businesses, savings, pensions, farms, and homes are the work of years. Take these away and you are diminishing a lot more than the GDP, or the final tally on the Big Board on Wall Street. Take these away, and a million dreams are undone. The gains of hard work and sacrifice are lost. And something can be lost that is very crucial in our economy, and very slow to return -- confidence.”

John McCain, Boca Raton debates, January, 2008: "I think it's very important that we make the Bush tax cuts permanent. I voted to make them permanent twice already." For a more complete assessment of McCain’s record on taxes, see http://online.wsj.com/public/article_print/SB120295108223666913.html)

John McCain, Lexington, Massachusetts, June 2008: “In a world of hostile and unstable suppliers of oil, this nation will achieve strategic independence by 2025." [Note: Energy policy has a direct impact on economic strength – but you know that]. McCain is committed to promoting and expanding the use of our domestic supplies of natural gas and to expanding domestic oil exploration.

John McCain on foreign trade, responding to the Washington Post, December 2007: “Ninety-five percent of the world's customers are outside our borders, so it makes sense to try to reach more of them with our products and services by concluding more trade agreements tied to vigorous enforcement
….We also benefit from direct investment in our nation.”
The great majority of economists believe that expanding trade agreements expands the economy.

We could go down a list of other items McCain has supported and opposed and evaluate them one by one. But that’s the window dressing. If we don’t have a strong country that can and will defend itself, and if we don’t have a country that is economically secure enough to afford defending itself, then who cares about anything else? And that’s the strongest case for John McCain.

Another endorsement for Obama
Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez has expelled the U.S. ambassador to Venezuela and recalled Venezuela’s ambassador in Washington. Chávez, whose politics are an amalgam of nationalism, socialism, communism and opposition to the U.S., said, “When there is a new government in the United States, we’ll send an ambassador.” The implication seems to be that Chávez will wait for Barack Obama.

Sounds like another endorsement for Obama. Let’s see, that makes:

Ahmed Yousuf, political advisor to the terrorist group Hamas
Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa whose election was partly financed by the terrorist group FARC and who is a personal friend of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
The North Korean newspaper Choson Sinbo.
And now, Hugo Chávez.

To be fair, Obama did not seek these endorsements and has disavowed several. Nonetheless, for good or ill, these folks seem to like Obama.

Yet Another Reason to Vote for Mac

What if . . . President Pelosi . . . Aaaarrrgggh!
Much is made of McCain's age.

Has anyone brought up the fact that Obama smokes and both of his parents died at an early age?

Plus Biden has had two brain aneurysms, which could have killed him.

If Obama and Biden both died while in office that would leave Nancy Pelosi as president.

I can't think of a better reason to vote for McCain & Palin

NYS Conservative Party Endorses McCain/Palin

Conservative Party of New York State
Press Release ~ September 16, 2008
~~~~~~~~~~
Conservatives to Endorse McCain/Palin Ticket
Contact: Shaun Marie Levine (518-356-7882)
Ft. Hamilton Station, NY -- September 16, 2008 - Conservatives will be meeting on Monday, September 22, in New York City to nominate and authorize presidential electors committed to the McCain/Palin ticket. The enthusiastic delegates were eager to endorse John S. McCain and Sarah Palin as their candidate for President and Vice-President, noting that recent polls show that New York State is not as blue as it was prior to the Sarah Palin nomination.
State Committee Delegates from across the State, will hear NYS Chairman Mike Long note that the political party, which delivered enough votes to have Ronald Reagan carry New York State in 1980, is ready to provide the same support to John S. McCain and Sarah Palin. Long will also tell Conservatives that the McCain/Palin ticket has a proven record of reform which is , seriously needed in Washington, DC. Further, the ticket is committed to winning the war on terror as well as protecting all of the citizens of the United States in the aftermath of the horrific 9/11 attacks. Senator McCain, certainly aware of the horrors of war, has made it clear that winning is the only acceptable end to the raging conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. He will never abdicate the leadership and strategic control of our military forces.
A McCain/Palin administration will understand the importance of tax relief for over-taxed families and will understand that spending is the problem. Earmarks will no longer rule in Washington, DC. The ticket also affirms that marriage is between a man and woman and it is committed to a pro-life agenda. While others have failed to reform the "third rail of politics," - Social Security - a McCain/Palin administration will seek to enable our children and grandchildren to save for their own future.
Every election is important, and once again we believe this election will give a clear indication of how Americans think. Will we face an era of government redistribution of wealth in the name of the supposed greater good? Or will we continue to recognize that the greater good is really when people, through perseverance and initiative, ultimately provide for themselves?
Chairman Long knows the delegates and enrollees of the Conservative Party are committed to self reliance and will provide the same margin of victory to the McCain/Palin ticket as they did for Ronald Reagan in 1980. "In 1980 no one believed New York would be in Ronald Reagan's corner, and New York political pundits believe New York is solidly blue, but the polls are closing, and we will be the political party that gives New York's electors to John S. McCain and Sarah Palin," predicted Long.
Tom Rooney for Congress
Irish-American Republicans Endorse Tom Rooney for Congress
(Stuart, FL) "We are proud to endorse a distinguished Irish-American, Tom Rooney to be the next Republican Congressman from Florida’s 16th District,” said Jim Bomford, Chairman of the Florida Irish-American Republicans. “As a former U.S. Army captain and a criminal prosecutor, we have no doubt that Tom has what it takes to be a strong advocate for law enforcement and for our nation’s security.”
The Irish-American Republicans are a national organization established in 1994 to support the Republican Party and its principles among the 45 million strong Irish-American community. Congress Up for Grabs!
Congressional Races Become Competitive!
Is it really surprising . . .
We are constantly told by the Leftwing media that Dubya has a low approval rating of 30%. However, it is preferable by far over the 8% approval rating that the do - nothing, ideologically alien, corrupt Harry Reid/Nancy Pelosi Congress enjoys.
Spies among us
In his 2006 novel The Foreign Correspondent set in pre-World War II Europe, author Alan Furst muses that “spies and journalists were fated to go through life together, and it was sometimes hard to tell one from the other. Their jobs weren’t all that different: they talked to politicians, developed sources in government bureaux, and dug around for secrets. Sometimes they talked to, and traded with, one another.”
Of course, a spy clandestinely passes his secret information on to his operators. A journalist can pass his secret information to his operators and the rest of the world by publishing it. One major difference between them is that a spy like FBI double agent Robert Hanssen, when caught, can be sentenced to prison. A journalist, in the United States anyway, can cite the first amendment to the Constitution: “Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom…of the press,” and can escape prosecution.
Perhaps one of the most egregious examples of journalistic spying occurred in 1942. Colonel Robert McCormick owned and ran the Chicago Tribune, hated President Franklin D. Roosevelt and opposed U.S. involvement in World War II. In 1942, a Tribune reporter, Stanley Johnston, while aboard a Navy ship, copied information from the cabin of executive officer Commander Mort Seligman. From that information, Johnston deduced that the U.S. Navy had broken the secret cipher of the Japanese Navy and had used the information to help win the Battle of Midway. So the Tribune ran the story with the headline:
“Navy Had Word Of Jap Plan To Strike At Sea.”
Roosevelt, who hated McCormick as much as McCormick hated him, wanted McCormick tried for treason (the maximum penalty during war time is death). A grand jury was convened but the U.S. Navy wouldn’t cooperate; they felt that the less said in a public forum about code breaking, the better. So the Tribune was never indicted.
The “Bay of Pigs” invasion of Cuba in 1961 was a failure for several reasons. One was that the Cubans knew the attack was coming. They learned of the plans by reading The Nation, the Guatemalan newspaper Hora and The New York Times. This prompted President John F. Kennedy to remark, "Every newspaper now asks itself with respect to every story: ‘is it news?' All I suggest is that you add the question: ‘is it in the interest of national security?' "
After the September 11, 2001, attacks, President Bush ordered the National Security Agency to survey phone calls from, or to, suspected or actual members of al Qaeda operating outside the U.S. The president has the constitutional authority to gather foreign intelligence but, if you focus on the fact that the other end of the call was to the U.S. and may have been to a U.S. citizen, you can call this “domestic eavesdropping.” On December 15, 2005, New York Times editor Bill Keller and Publisher Arthur Sulzberger decided to call the phone monitoring “domestic eavesdropping” and by publishing it, to pass the information to al Qaeda and the rest of the world despite a request from the White House not to do so. One can assume that al Qaeda has become more circumspect in their communication to the U.S. since then.
On June 23, 2006, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Wall Street Journal published articles detailing the U.S.’s monitoring of international financial transactions involving terrorists. By tapping into the Swift system (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications) in Belgium, the U.S. was able to cull pertinent information from the 11 million daily financial transactions among 7,800 banks and financial institutions from 200 countries. The news articles stressed that there was nothing illegal in the monitoring and New York Times Editor Bill Keller said that the revelation would have no effect on U.S. efforts to monitor financial transactions. Nevertheless, after the June 23rd publication, the European Union began an investigation to determine any conflicts in EU laws that would stop the U.S. from continuing to monitor these transactions. Even if the EU and Swift continue to cooperate, al Qaeda now knows enough to be more covert in their financial transactions.
And last week, journalist Bob Woodward claimed that the U.S is spying on Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. He may be right, but if he is, what does revealing the information accomplish – other than to enhance Woodward’s reputation as a journalist? Maybe Woodward should have considered Kennedy’s admonition, “Is it in the interest of national security?” before going public.
Author Furst may have hit the nail on the head when he said that spies and journalists are not that different. One difference is that at least when the KGB got information from Robert Hanssen, they had to pay him. Others get their intelligence gratis courtesy of journalists.
The Yale connection – Not
Here’s a bit of electoral trivia for you. This is the first presidential election since 1972 in which neither major party offers a presidential or vice presidential candidate who attended Yale University (as a graduate or undergraduate).
And, had young Richard Nixon the money to travel from California to New Haven, having been offered a scholarship, he could have attended Yale as well and that would changed the date in the trivia to 1964.
And that information, plus two bucks, will get you a latte at Starbuck’s.
The case for Barack Obama
Presidential candidates John McCain, Barack Obama, Ralph Nader and Bob Barr are all Americans. There is no doubt that they share many values with the rest of us and want what is best for this country.
It seems strange then that we often can find little good to say about the candidate who is opposing our favorite. In fact, some often stoop to irrelevant and shallow attacks: he’s got a smirk, he talks to lobbyists, he has a funny name, can she take care of her children yadda, yadda, yadda.
There are strengths in each candidate and I think the strengths should be recognized. While it is no secret that I favor John McCain, this week I am going to make a case for Barack Obama and list what a person with my convictions sees positive in an Obama presidency that a McCain presidency will not bring.
As the first black person to hold that office, he would be a role model for black youth. This is no small factoid. There are millions of disaffected young black people who feel that everything is stacked against them and they have no chance. Accordingly, they drop out of mainline society and live in their own subculture. An Obama presidency would change many of these attitudes and could have profound effect on American society.
He is an excellent communicator. While this skill won’t get Vladimir Putin to pull troops out of Georgia or get NATO to increase troop commitments in Afghanistan, it does have an effect. Think of Ronald Reagan’s “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall,” or John Kennedy’s “Ich bin ein Berliner.” Furthermore, Americans want to like their president and follow his lead. If President Bush had been able to speak of the war in Iraq with the same skill that Obama used when he spoke of his minister Jeremiah Wright, Bush, I think, would have had more support.
Obama proposes creating a Civilian Assistance Corps (CAC) of 25,000 as an adjunct to the military. One of the difficulties we had in Iraq was not a military weakness but that our military is not constructed to initiate, operate or transition a defeated country to a new civilian state with an operational infrastructure. The proposed CAC would be designed to transition a failed state to an operational one. The Obama idea is a good one and is similar to a proposal made by the Department of Defense.
Obama has called for the youth to volunteer for community service to the nation. I believe that youth will respond to Obama’s call and volunteering to do community service is a good thing.
There is more to Obama’s positions than I’ve mentioned here. (To see his positions in full, link to http://www.barackobama.com/issues/.) There are more good things, like simplifying the tax code, reducing waste in Medicare, making health care “affordable” – but how many times have you heard those promises? Then there are the pure boilerplate (e.g., work with the Palestinians and Israelis for peace, work toward a democratic Cuba) that every presidential candidate for the past 50 years has espoused. And then, of course, there are positions with which I disagree.
But this is the case for Obama. And the above points are those by which an Obama presidency would make this a better nation.
The Republican Convention
Did you watch the Republican Convention last week? The Republicans nominated Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska and, as her running mate they nominated what’s-his-name.
Quote without comment
Jay Leno commenting on Sarah Palin’s acceptance speech: “Last night, Barack Obama got beat up by a girl.”
Leno on Palin again: “That’s all we need: another vice president who hunts.”
What Made Them Do Their Duty?
A tribute to the firefighters, police and other rescuers who gave their lives on September 11
What Made Them Do Their Duty?
Victor Davis Hanson
At the Twin Towers, cops and firemen showed they really were New York’s Finest, New York’s Bravest.
From the very first moments of the World Trade Center horror, the valor and élan of New York's firemen, together with that of the city's police and emergency forces, have transfixed the whole nation—especially us in rural America who rarely see the real Gotham. Danger was nothing to them, courage and honor everything. They responded instantly to the explosion and fire, all drawn to, rather than repelled by, the inferno—and without regard to their own safety or the consequences of their possible incineration upon their loved ones at home. We now know their last radio cries: "Move away from the towers! Everyone move away from the towers!" Silence. . . .
As the ghastly rubble gets turned over, we find their remains in clusters—four incinerated here, ten buried there, 14 caught en masse in a stairwell, where they had guided the panicked down as they themselves ascended to their deaths: "All nonessential personnel move away from that building!" The antithesis, left unsaid, is obvious: "All necessary rescuers get into that building!"
So many of them disappeared—at least 388 firefighters—because in a heartbeat they chose to race into the flames and smoke rather than to hesitate and accept the obvious: that the towers were already death traps. In the tradition of all great American armies in battle, officers— 47 lieutenants, 20 captains, and 21 chiefs—died alongside the rank and file, heroic death requiring no prerequisite of class or color. Indeed, the magnitude of the terrorist-inflicted disaster rivaled that of a fierce battle, where the enemy overruns and annihilates an entire military unit—paramedics, a fire marshal, even the fire department's chaplain were engulfed. Remarkably, moments after the buildings collapsed, there were even more rescue workers on the scene than before. It is human to flee from a place of death; the firemen and the police were almost inhuman in mounting so quickly the rubble that buried their brethren.
Pete King for Congress - Kick Off!
Congressman Pete King addresses the large crowd of his supporters
John Fleming, Congressman Pete King and Patrick Hurley
Pete King for Congress Kick Off
On Saturday Sept 6, nearly 500 supporters packed into Mulcahy's Bar, in Wantagh, Nassau County, New York for the Pete King for Congress Campaign Kick Off. The event was chaired by, among others, Jimmy Boyle, past president of the United Firefighter's Association.
The crowd was about eighty per cent Irish - American prompting one attendee to remark, "This is the real Irish America. Not the Manhattan - based Irish Left Wing cocktail circuit that is incessantly regurgitated as 'Irish America'".
In addressing the attendance, Pete King asked everybody for their support. He stated that he was running on his record of principled support for commonsenical measures to secure the nation. He noted that because of measures like the Patriot Act and other proactive steps like intelligent eavesdropping, law enforcement and our intelligence services had been successful in thwarting several Islamic terrorist plots since Sept 11. Consequently, the nation had successfully avoided another attack. However, Islamic terrorism had not gone away and the enemy was always watching and waiting.
Pete also spoke of his support for the campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan and stated that he would continue to support their assertive prosecution and to ensure that our troops enjoyed full support. Pete also referred to his endeavors to combat illegal immigration and to secure our borders, mentioning that these goals were essential to our national security and economic vitality. He committed to continuing these efforts in the next Congress.
Pete enthusiastically endorsed the John McCain - Sarah Palin ticket. Describing McCain as a true American hero, he urged all to turn out on Election Day to make Senator McCain the next President of the United States.
Obamamaniacs Dump 'Stars & Stripes'
Saturday, September 6, 2008
John McCain’s presidential campaign prepared to chastise Democrats Saturday over leaving behind piles of miniature American flags after Barack Obama’s nomination acceptance speech last Thursday in Denver.
Boy Scouts have arrived with 84 trash bags full of bundles of flags at the site of a McCain rally scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. local time in Colorado Springs. The campaign says the flags were recovered from Invesco Field after the Democrats concluded their convention there, and they are going to be used as part of the warm-up ceremonies before McCain takes the stage for the rally.
FOX News has been told a vendor at Invesco Field found the flags, which were going to be thrown out, and turned them over to the McCain campaign. Veterans in Colorado Springs are expected to distribute the flags to the audience at the rally.
FOX News’ Carl Cameron contributed to this report.
On Obama
What is equally scary is the fact that the Daily library at the University, in Chicago, sealed the papers concerning the Ayers/Obama commission work and would not let reporters review them.
Irish American GOP leader, Florida
Obama is too used to having his political opponents thrown off the ballot, and now that he actually has to run against an opponent, he is resorting to true form -- a Communist who uses the force of government to silence free speech and dissent. It will not be "patriotic" under an Obama administration to criticize the government. It will probably be a capital offense.
I have always registered as an "independent" because of my basic belief that I have an obligation to myself and my country to vote, not for the party, but rather for the person whom I determine to be best possible candidate.
Having said that, I must be honest with regard to the upcoming Presidential election and say that Barack Obama scares me. I do not think that I could, in good conscience, vote for him to assume the most powerful political office in the free world.
I honestly believe that his greatest asset is his ability to mesmerize people with his unquestioned oratory skills. Beyond that, I fail to see any substance to the man. His ultra liberal, socialist leaning, policies are not in concert with my beliefs as a Catholic and as a proud American veteran.
I truly believe that in this election, following the dictates of my conscience, I will be voting for Senator John McCain.
On Pete King
Hey Pat. Had dinner last night with a retired NY Republican House member, who was bemoaning the fate of Republicans in general, and NY in particular. He said there will only be two elected House Republicans in the state, and Pete King is one of them. We HAVE to keep Pete in the Congress.
God bless,
Irish American GOP leader, Virginia
Patrick,
Read your post about Peter King fundraiser at Mulcahy's. Will get a few people there from McAllister Family Justice Campaign.
AOH leader, Nassau County
Mr. Hurley:
Thanks for sending me this. Very interesting.
Send my good wishes to Peter.
On ILIR, Sinn Fein and the AOH
The ouster of Meehan was orchestrated by Sinn Fein "groupies" within the AOH. We were caught unawares. Sinn Fein is no friend of this country and the AOH is a loyal American organization. Seamus Boyle may well have bought himself a challenge at the next convention.
As for any resolution in support of ILIR it is not worth the paper it is written on. Can't you just imagine AOH members across the country - cops, deputies, firefighters, federal agents, district attorneys, lawyers, judges, retired military and businessmen - all lining up to support ILIR/Sinn Fein and their radical anti American cause. I don't think so.
