King will not contest U.S. Senate

Dated: January 11, 2010 For Immediate Release

CONGRESSMAN KING REAFFIRMS DECISION NOT TO RUN FOR SENATE
Sees Republicans Retaking House in 2010

Congressman Pete King announced today that he is reaffirming his decision not to run for the United States Senate against Kirsten Gillibrand in 2010. Rep. King has issued the following statement:

"More that four months ago I announced that I would not be a candidate for the United States Senate in 2010. During the past several weeks, however, a number of state and national leaders - as well as many friends and supporters - asked me to reconsider my decision. Because of my great regard for all those people, I told them I would discuss their request with my family and close advisors over Christmas and announce my decision early in the New Year.

While the political situation has changed dramatically in the Republicans' favor since September and I believe that Sen. Gillibrand can and will be defeated in 2010, I will not be a candidate for the Senate.

There are two main reasons for my decision:

1) The time I would have to devote to fundraising and campaigning throughout New York state over the next 10 months would prevent me from doing my job as Congressman and as Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Committee; and

2) I am increasingly confident that Republicans will retake the majority in the House of Representatives and that I will again have the opportunity to be Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee - a position which, as recent events have dramatically demonstrated, is vital to the safety of our nation and the New York City-Long Island region.

It has been my privilege to represent New York's 3rd Congressional District for more that 17 years. I hope to be re-elected to that position in November."

Pete King-Getting Ready for 2010

Message from Congressman Peter King

Dear Supporter:

I need your help to be re-elected.

This year's election results contained a lot of good news. Republicans won the Governor's races in New Jersey and Virginia and scored a series of major upsets in Nassau County and Suffolk County as well.

One result, however, could cause real problems for me. Democrats won the special election for Congress in upstate New York, taking a seat that had always been Republican. This gives the Democrats a 27-2 Congressional majority from New York. There is only one Republican Congressman between me and the Canadian border and his district is more than 300 miles north of mine!

This makes me a prime target in next year's election. The Democrats can focus all their efforts on me. This is especially true because I have opposed all the Obama agenda - including so-called healthcare reform, cap and trade, the stimulus bill and the closing of Guantanamo. I also continue to speak out very loudly supporting the war against Islamic terrorism and exposing the dangers of political correctness.

The pressure on Congress in the upcoming weeks and months to ram though a healthcare bill will be particularly intense and, because I will continue to oppose this misguided legislation, I can expect to be attacked by Democratic operatives and their allies in the liberal media.

To make sure that I am able to defend myself against the upcoming attacks against me, I am asking for your financial help. I am asking you to make a donation to my campaign committee. Even though the next election is almost a year away, I need to be getting everything in place now. I have to be ready for an all-out effort.

I hate doing this - but I have no choice. Any contribution you can afford to make will be greatly appreciated and put to good use. My website
http://www.peteking.com can accept any donations by credit card or you can mail a check to my committee:

Fighting Irish Lawmakers Hopping Mad

From TheHill.com

Fighting Irish lawmakers mad over Obama’s honor

By Betsy Rothstein and Kris Kitto
03/26/09
Several Republican lawmakers who are Notre Dame alumni are strongly criticizing the school for inviting President Obama to give a commencement speech — and for giving the him an honorary degree. The lawmakers say the president’s views on abortion run counter to Catholic beliefs, and that it is inappropriate to honor him with a degree.

Rep. Pete King (R-N.Y.), who is mulling a Senate run in New York, where Obama won with more than 60 percent of the vote in 2008, said Obama should be allowed to speak, but opposed his receiving the degree. “It would be appropriate for Notre Dame to invite the president of the United States to deliver the commencement address, provided that the university made it absolutely clear how strongly it disagreed with President Obama’s stand on abortion,” King said. “It is wrong, however, for Notre Dame to award President Obama an honorary degree, because this will be seen as tacit acceptance of the president’s abortion views, which are so antithetical to Catholic moral teaching on the sanctity and value of human life.”

Tougher words came from Rep. Dan Lungren (R-Calif.). “It’s an extreme disappointment,” said Lungren, whose father, two brothers, son and three nieces also graduated from Notre Dame. Lungren cited Obama’s abortion views, and his recent decision to rescind a Bush administration rule that strengthened job protections for doctors and nurses who refuse to perform abortions for moral reasons. Lungren plans to contact people he knows at Notre Dame “to find out what their excuse is.” The comments come as an online petition asking Notre Dame’s president to halt the “travesty” of Obama speaking at graduation gathers steam. The petition had more than 130,000 signatures as of Wednesday afternoon.

Republican Rep. Mark Souder (Ind.), another Notre Dame alumnus, also voiced concern over this year’s speaker. Souder said it is “an honor” for a president to visit the university — but pointed to abortion and even Obama’s views on school vouchers as affronts to the Catholic faith. “He received the invitation out of respect for his position as leader of our nation, not as an endorsement of his personal views,” said Souder, who received a master’s degree in business administration from Notre Dame.

Two Democrats who graduated from Notre Dame, Reps. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) and Pete Visclosky (D-Ind.), did not respond to requests for comment. Rep. Daniel Lipinski (D-Ill.), a former faculty member, also did not respond to a call. Donnelly’s district includes Notre Dame’s campus.

The Real Gitmo

THE REAL GITMO
By Peter King
New York Post Op/Ed
February 26, 2009

HAVING just returned from leading a con gressional delegation to the terrorist-detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, I am more convinced than ever that President Obama's executive order to close Gitmo by next Jan. 22 is wrong and misguided and, if fully implemented, will threaten American security at home and abroad. To be fair, the president deserves much credit for a series of key decisions he has made in the war against terrorism: 1) launching predator missiles against Taliban and al Qaeda locations in the Afghanistan-Pakistan theater; 2) detaining, without trial, enemy combatants captured and imprisoned overseas, and 3) invoking the "state secrets" privilege to block a lawsuit on CIA renditions (the practice of allowing other nations to interrogate non-US citizen terror detainees). Unfortunately, his Gitmo decision undercuts these positive actions.

It has become an article of faith among the MoveOn.org crowd and the Democratic Party's liberal base to denounce Guantanamo as a symbol of inhumane treatment and torture. (Indeed, in his address to Congress on Tuesday, the president announced the closing of Guantanamo in the same paragraph in which he said "that is why I can stand here tonight and say . . . the United States of America does not torture.") Yet that symbolism doesn't square with the real Gitmo.

Detainees at Guantanamo are treated far better than most American prisoners in the US jails and prisons I've inspected over the years. The unfounded accusations that are so regularly and cavalierly made about Guantanamo are a slander against the brave men and women of our armed forces, who perform their duties at that facility so professionally and under such duress.

If there's any scandal at Guantanamo, it is that the detainees are treated too well. Consider what I observed:

* Detainees get three full meals a day with a choice of menu.

* Each detainee receives a Koran and a prayer rug.

* Arrows throughout the facility point toward Mecca.

* Detainees receive full medical treatment - including psychiatric services. There is one medical personnel for every two detainees.

* Detainees who comply with regulations are allowed out of their cells for 16 to 20 hours a day and participate in various recreational and educational activities including soccer, language training and art classes.

* Noncompliant detainees - including the hardest of the hard core - are allowed out of their cells for four to seven hours a day. (It was particularly galling to observe a vicious terrorist reclining in the sun like a Palm Beach retiree.)

* Detainees have access to live TV, books and two daily Arab newspapers plus USA Today. (I suppose it would be inhumane to subject them to The New York Times.)

* Detainees are allowed to confer to discuss courtroom strategy.

* Guards within the facility are not armed and are regularly subjected to abuse and harassment, including having human feces and urine thrown at them.

These are not just my conclusions. The Defense Department has just finished its review of Guantanamo as ordered by President Obama and determined that conditions comply with the Geneva Conventions: "No prohibited acts were found and conditions are humane."

We are at war with Islamic terrorism. Gitmo is a major front in that war. Closing Guantanamo could well mean releasing deadly Islamic terrorists overseas or bringing them to American soil. It would be craven surrender to left-wing groups and uninformed, self-righteous world opinion. We must do all we can to convince President Obama to reverse his decision.

Pete King for U.S. Senate 2010

Caroline Kennedy drops out

Dear Friends of Pete King,

The breaking news is that Caroline Kennedy is not seeking the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Hillary Clinton. Below is a link to a Newsday story - at the bottom you are given the opportunity to cast your vote for who Governor Paterson should appoint to the seat.

(Editors Note: Newsday has changed their poll for who Gov. Paterson should appoint to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Hillary Clinton. Congressman King's name no longer appears as a choice. There is no longer an opportunity to vote for Pete. The poll "results" should be interpreted accordingly!)

Pete King for Congress - Kick Off!

Congressman Pete King addresses the large crowd of his supporters

John Fleming, Congressman Pete King and Patrick Hurley

Pete King for Congress Kick Off
On Saturday Sept 6, nearly 500 supporters packed into Mulcahy's Bar, in Wantagh, Nassau County, New York for the Pete King for Congress Campaign Kick Off. The event was chaired by, among others, Jimmy Boyle, past president of the United Firefighter's Association.

The crowd was about eighty per cent Irish - American prompting one attendee to remark, "This is the real Irish America. Not the Manhattan - based Irish Left Wing cocktail circuit that is incessantly regurgitated as 'Irish America'".

In addressing the attendance, Pete King asked everybody for their support. He stated that he was running on his record of principled support for commonsenical measures to secure the nation. He noted that because of measures like the Patriot Act and other proactive steps like intelligent eavesdropping, law enforcement and our intelligence services had been successful in thwarting several Islamic terrorist plots since Sept 11. Consequently, the nation had successfully avoided another attack. However, Islamic terrorism had not gone away and the enemy was always watching and waiting.

Pete also spoke of his support for the campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan and stated that he would continue to support their assertive prosecution and to ensure that our troops enjoyed full support. Pete also referred to his endeavors to combat illegal immigration and to secure our borders, mentioning that these goals were essential to our national security and economic vitality. He committed to continuing these efforts in the next Congress.

Pete enthusiastically endorsed the John McCain - Sarah Palin ticket. Describing McCain as a true American hero, he urged all to turn out on Election Day to make Senator McCain the next President of the United States.

King Instrumental - Visas for 15 9/11 Bereaved

Visas for 15 Who Lost Relatives on 9/11
By KIRK SEMPLE
New York Times
August 16, 2008
Federal officials granted temporary legal status on Friday to 15 illegal immigrants whose spouses or parents died on 9/11 but who have remained largely invisible, living in the shadows of society for fear of deportation. Those officials and the families’ supporters said the decision would clear the way for Congress to move forward on bills that would grant the immigrants permanent legal status. “When I told my clients about it, there were tears of joy,” said Debra Brown Steinberg, a lawyer representing several of the immigrants. “They can show their faces and say their names.” “Now they can make 9/11 their story, too,” she added. “It’s a great day.” The immigrants have lived in limbo since the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. They were the wives, husbands and children of several victims in the World Trade Center, some of whom were legal immigrants, the rest of whom were illegal themselves.
