Unemployment Rampant in Celtic Tiger

NEARLY 1,000 people lost their jobs every working day last month. The figures emerged in what was called a “Black Friday” for workers. Tánaiste and Employment Minister Mary Coughlan insisted, however, that the economy was not in meltdown nor was it returning to the difficulties of the 1980s. However, Ms Coughlan’s comments came before Central Statistics Office figures revealed that 19,055 extra people signed on the dole last month, its highest ever monthly increase.
